Birmingham Quality Spray Foam prices spray foam by the square foot, and the foam type sets the range: $1.50 to $3.50 for open-cell, $2.50 to $5.50 for closed-cell.
On a typical Birmingham home with 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of wall area, a wall project usually quotes between $4,000 and $12,000 depending on foam type and how accessible the walls are.
Attics run differently because the area and the approach differ — most attic projects land between $3,000 and $8,000. New construction, where everything is open and nothing has to be removed, runs $6,000 to $15,000 for a whole house.
Below: cost by area of the house, what open-cell and closed-cell actually buy you for the difference, and the conditions that move a quote up or down.
Closed-cell costs more because it is denser, uses more material per inch of thickness, and delivers a higher R-value per inch — typically around R-6 to R-7 against roughly R-3.5 to R-3.8 for open-cell.
That means the comparison is not simply price per square foot. If a cavity has to hit a particular R-value, closed-cell gets there in fewer inches, which matters when the cavity depth is fixed. Our comparison against fiberglass and the open-cell versus closed-cell breakdown go into the trade properly.
New construction is the cheapest way to get foam into a house, because the cavities are open, nothing has to be removed, and the crew is not working around finished surfaces. If you are building, it is materially less than retrofitting the same house later.
This is the biggest variable in retrofit work. Open wall cavities during a renovation are straightforward. Finished walls mean either removing drywall or injecting through holes, and both add labour.
Attics vary just as much — a walkable attic with decent headroom prices differently from one where the crew works on their stomachs between trusses.
Old fiberglass batts or blown cellulose usually have to come out before foam goes in, and removal and disposal is a real line item. Attics with decades of accumulated blown insulation are the slow case.
You are buying inches, not just coverage. The per-square-foot figures assume a standard application depth, and specifying more inches to hit a higher R-value raises the number proportionally.
Foam sticks to everything, so masking, covering and protecting the surrounding area is part of the job. In an occupied house that takes longer than in an empty one.
Penetrations, rim joists, top plates and around any chases need attention. This is where a foam job succeeds or underperforms, and it is not the place to cut.
Birmingham has a long cooling season, high humidity, and a lot of houses with vented attics that run extremely hot for months.
The attic is usually the single highest-return area, because that is where the temperature differential is greatest and where air leakage does most damage. Our attic spray foam page covers the options.
Crawl spaces are the second, and are underrated. Sealing and insulating a vented crawl space stops humid outside air from being pulled into the floor system all summer, which affects both comfort and moisture. See crawl space foam insulation.
Thickness and R-value are the two most often left vague, and they are the two that determine whether you got what you paid for. A price per square foot with no depth specified is not a quote.
